Japanese Music Industry Creates A New Group For Metaverse

J-pop has recently announced an ambitious virtual project spearheaded by one of Japan’s top record producers, Yasushi Akimoto.

This project aims to enhance the music industry’s connection with immersive Metaverse technology. Akimoto, renowned for his successful promotion of bands like AKB48 and Nogizaka46, has partnered with Overs Co. to embark on this J-pop Metaverse initiative.

The collaboration signifies a significant step in blending traditional music production with cutting-edge virtual environments, promising a new era in the music industry.

Details about the new J-pop group under Yasushi Akimoto’s project remain largely under wraps. However, Overs has revealed that the project will be financed through an Initial Exchange Offering (IEO).

In this arrangement, a company offers new cryptocurrencies on a designated exchange to raise capital. Overs plans to launch this IEO early next year. Additionally, the Metaverse-based idol group is set to make its debut in the winter of 2023.

Prior to Akimoto joining the project, Overs had released a press statement outlining that the Metaverse group would engage in typical idol group activities, such as recording music and holding concerts. Moreover, it was highlighted that fan interaction would be facilitated through Blockchain technology and NFTs, offering a new dimension to fan engagement.

Akimoto, a leading figure in Japan’s music industry with a 40-year career, has seen his productions sell over 100 million copies globally. His most notable successes have been with large girl groups, often featuring novel concepts and extensive memberships. Japan, with its rich array of intellectual property (IP), is well-acquainted with simulated musical acts, setting a promising stage for this venture into the Metaverse.

The South Korean music industry is heavily embracing the Metaverse, with groups like Aespa, a self-proclaimed ‘Metaverse K-pop girl group’ with four members, exemplifying this trend. Their latest album set a new record as the best-selling release by a female group in Korean music history.

Similarly, various industries in Japan are integrating Metaverse and virtual technologies into their offerings. Earlier this year, the president of Nintendo, a major gaming company, expressed interest in the Metaverse. Furthermore, NTT Docomo, Japan’s largest telecommunications operator, has announced plans to introduce Metaverse-based services soon.

The idea of virtual concerts has been inherent in the Metaverse concept from its inception. However, the specifics of how fans will interact with artists in the Metaverse remain somewhat ambiguous. Overs is taking a more defined approach to this issue.

According to their announcements, they have laid the groundwork for a new Japanese idol group project within the Metaverse. Efforts are ongoing to turn this concept into a tangible reality.
